Introduction

Congratulations to all incoming students on your successful admission. We are pleased to welcome you to Kyushu University.
At university, you will use your PC not only for classes, but also to access a wide range of information necessary for campus life via the network.
Here, we provide a brief introduction to Kyushu University’s educational information environment (the education and learning environment using computers and networks).

What kinds of classes use computers?

Learning materials related to information literacy (such as the use of email, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, as well as information ethics and security) are provided through a web-based learning system, and students are expected to study them independently. In information-related lectures offered to students of all faculties and departments, students use their own PCs in classes such as programming, image processing, and cybersecurity. In language education, large-scale classes using PCs are combined with small-group classes. In addition, PCs are used in various other classes depending on the faculty and department.

Situations where computers are needed outside of classes

To attend university classes, students must register for courses each semester, and most faculties conduct course registration via the web. University courses include required and elective subjects, and students use the syllabus when selecting courses (the syllabus serves both as a guide for course registration and as a source of detailed information about each course). Grades are announced through a web-based system. Furthermore, when communicating with instructors or other students for classes, students may use their Kyushu University Primary Mail accounts. Important emails from the university are sent to these accounts, so they must be checked regularly. University announcements are delivered to students via the student portal and the university website, and other online platforms.

The university’s computer environment

Kyushu University develops and operates information systems related to education across the entire university, such as web-based learning systems. However, students are expected to use their own personal PCs for classes and home study. To support this, the university provides software such as Microsoft Office and security software free of charge for student use.

Software and services provided by the university

Kyushu University has a campus license agreement with Microsoft, which allows students of the university to install Microsoft 365 Apps (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.) on their personally owned PCs free of charge.
In addition, Kyushu University has entered into the Trend Micro Campus Agreement for Endpoint, allowing students to use the security software Trend Micro Apex One free of charge.
Furthermore, Kyushu University is a member institution of the Wacom Creators College Club, which allows Kyushu University students to purchase tablet devices commonly used in design fields at discounted prices compared to regular prices. *A student ID is required, so actual purchases can be made after enrollment.

Wireless LAN access on campus (edunet, kitenet)

A wireless LAN network environment is available throughout the university, allowing students to access the network in most areas of the campus if they have their own PC. This enables daily exchange and access of various types of information via the web, including email and the student portal. For classes, students can register for courses, check syllabi, view learning materials, submit assignments, and check grades online.

Preparations for using a personally owned PC for classes

When students purchase a personal PC, it typically does not include all the software required for classes, and the necessary settings are not yet configured. Therefore, before classes begin in April, students are required to install the necessary software and complete various settings. Installation manuals for the software will be published as soon as they are ready, so please complete the required procedures in time for the start of classes. Necessary information will be provided separately. Please pay attention to the information at the following URL.

The software installed here will be limited to software used by all faculties. Software specific to individual faculties or departments should be installed by students themselves after enrollment. In addition, the required PC specifications (such as performance) differ by faculty and department, so please refer to the page below or the specification table included in the “Admission Guidebook” sent to you by Kyushu University.

Classes will begin on April 8

Please complete the initial PC setup and the PC configuration procedures published by Kyushu University by the start of classes.
